I have several family members who are business owners I could easily work for. One is my father. In addition, through my current employment, several other options have opened up that I can easily fall back on if need be.
Sorry to be so hard on ya man, but the world is tough. With the fall of unions, you're going to see more and more situations like that. A plan B is a necessity. I have often thought what I would do if I lost my job tomorrow and I've prepared the best I can for that.
