Use 8 teams, and especially if you use auto bids, and you're gonna get some not so great 4-loss teams.

4 teams is great, and 6 teams with 2 play-in games (a la each conference of the NFL) would be good by me, also.

There's still room for great college football outside of the playoff. This year's Rose Bowl was fantastic, WHO CARES if it's part of the playoff or not?
