spoke with a previous hospital staff person, he referenced Canada's system.
Canadians have a single payer system. Canadians tend do simple procedures in Canada, for free. They pay a hefty tax (in large part because of a smaller econ). Canadians come to the US to get treatments for major problems because of the delays. The system puts a limit on numbers of patients like a que. That and availability of specialists for complicated procedures is the reason you see the outstanding waits. Many Canadians also get diagnosed in the US and buy their $6 copay drugs in Canada. So our proposed single payer would have to use the surplus cash saved in eliminating the 2nd party cost of insurance & (I don't know) as a cash buffer to keep it in the black.
Anyone else know more about a proposed implementation of single payer here?
