As to Coach Ruby's work, it was not feasible to travel the way you can now. Even so, to be considered by any legitimate organization as the top team in the nation says something pretty remarkable. And it was back to back.
George Meanwell had an even better record than Coach Ruby, but his years were divided by a year with John Miller. (I have always wondered about those four years with Miller and Meanwell.) Meanwell had two 17-1 teams.
So in a 5 year stretch, Mizzou was 81-7, which included 3 17-1 records and a 16-1 record. This was a great program.
If you or others want to discount it, that's up to you. It is part of our history. I think we should take advantage of it. While others may laugh at the beakers Helms history, I doubt recruits laugh about it. It's part of the lore they sell.
