The Cash cover was recorded very near the end of his life, and is about an evaluation of an entire life lived, and to a degree redemption. The Reznor original is not. Reznor agrees. "In 2002, Cash covered Hurt and Reznor was in awe and announced in Rolling Stone magazine that Hurt belonged to Cash. "
