can play havoc with a bb team. Not as much with a football team. In most cases it takes multiple screw ups to do the same amount of damage on a football team, and one can be marginalized on a football team.
Cohesiveness as a group in an extremely important dynamic. The willingness to work together instead of each seeking their own best interest can allow much greater overall success.
This is why the send people in the military to boot camp. The first objective is to break recruits of me-itis, so they can molded into a team, which can accomplish far more than a group of individuals, each with their own objective.
