By who you play, and how you performed. In each and every game. Over the course of an entire season. Not just one single head to head game between two teams. Unless it's a total and complete beat down, like PSU suffered to fellow playoff finalist Michigan, head to head match ups are greatly overrated. The entire body of work as evaluated by good but flawed human beings is what counts.

It works pretty well actually. Much better than crunching numbers in a computer. It's not perfect, but if you have a better way I'd like to hear it.
