It is regulatory forces that prevent most monopolies.

In a free market the big fish would constantly buy up the smaller fish and use market forces to destroy those who would not sell.

Huge corporations have the capital to plan long term. If I have the ability to work at a loss for a couple of years while I destroy all my competition that is not a real problem because once I become a monopoly I am free to set prices wherever I wish.
