down if we moved closer to a nation of limited federal government involvement in our lives and allowed a lot more flexibility to the states to make their own laws and to run their own lives.

The federal government should be limited to legitimate self defense... and that does not include working for "regime change" around the world, and interstate commerce & some basic treaties etc. and not much else.

Subsidiarity. Let the people decide their laws at the lowest level possible... as close to the people themselves as possible.
