In all seriousness, you preserve the union. They'd have to convince the military people in California to go first, hope the federal government doesn't withdraw everything, then count on the citizenry and they're probably not going to be well armed given that it's California.

The real risk would be foreign involvement. US Civil War is probably the largest fear of foreign governments behind their own potential civil wars.
