I think players have to be able to make adjustments on their own. Good teams don't have coaches that control every possessions. Generally they have good inbounds plays, after time outs, & late games. Most of the 40 minutes is on players to recognize what the other team is doing and adjust.
Now if the players haven't been prepared in practice to make adjustments, then that is on the coaches.
