that causes the other team to struggle, and the struggling is on the players instead of the coaching?

It obviously was intended as a controlled scrimmage and its certainly valid to say they didn't abide by the rules and we had yet to work on the things they wanted to work on and were thus unprepared. But that is not true at all to say that being unable to adjust to a tactical change in the opposition is on the players.
