They had poor FG%, that isn't the same thing as being a poor shooter. They have to be able to get shots in manners they are able to convert. Denmon has the ability to get those looks for himself, played with teammates who were conducive to getting them, and played in a system that generated them. When his role changed in his sophomore season his FG% rose accordingly.

Vanleer wasn't a bad shooter last year. He didn't get very many good looks generated for him and he has a considerably difficult time at this level at least at this point trying to shoot with the pace and athleticism of the game.
