Juries that gave absurd amounts in lawsuits was a reason doctors across the river from St. Louis quit delivering babies there. Not sure if it was only whatever county E. St. Louis is in, but I think it may have included a surrounding Illinois county or two as well.
I saw one news report where a doctor said that after the cost of the professional liability insurance the doctors were only left with $50 for delivering a baby and that wouldn't cover their office expenses, much less salaries for the nurses, administrators etc. That was for doctors who had never been sued. A doctor who had been sued, even if it was a frivolous lawsuit was put out of business as the rates were then through the roof.
