is just fodder for both parties to keep the citizens focused on what, in the reality of their lives, is the "look at the squirrel!" argument while their country slides deeper into debt and individual liberty is contracted even further.

If anyone seriously thinks the people of Russia, or Saudi Arabia, or any other country are going to be crestfallen and disillusioned because some political contestant in the USA said something to upset the sensibilities of the modern media and the loyal foot soliders of the 2 party system, then they've got rocks in their head.
