You lower them so your team has a chance to realistically obtain what they set out to do at the beginning of the season.
It doesn't surprise me that you haven't changed your expectations for year 3 based on years 1 and 2 because you don't want Anderson retained.
Not a single coach, or athletic department, in the country makes season expectations based on where they thought you should be 2 years ago...
Especially considering there is not a single player on this roster that was a part of the team you originally had the expectations for.
