There are a ****-ton of factors at play regarding the rise of both of them. There was a great populist revolt around the 1890s, the little guys ****ED off at the institutions who don't share the wealth. Ralph Nader wrote eloquently about all that, that he was playing a role in laying the ground work for the populist uprising to come - based alot on what happened with populist agrarians in the 1890s.
It will take some serious time and research to make sens of all that is happening in 2016. An easy commentary on it likely would miss the boat.
Could be the deathknell of two party (uni-party) format in the US. But those institutions are pretty dug in.
