Not sure I follow the point of your post. MU men's basketball was always highly competitive and had many great moments and accomplishments over a very prolonged period until the last two seasons. Nor do I quite understand what is odd about overwhelming frustration and apathy from the fanbase given what has occurred and the direction MU has taken with the program the last couple of years. Its actually kind of mind boggling this kind of ineptitude is possible, we are kind of fortunate that most have tuned the program out from a serious level or there would likely be considerably more backlash.
