As background, our deep state issued dire warnings that grossly exaggerated Soviet military strength in the 1980s. The CIA reports were all wrong and all in the same direction. That wasn't good enough for William Casey so he actually created a separate unit staffed with handpicked propandists to lie even more. When the soviet union collapsed and we got access to internal soviet files, the lies collapsed but our media ignored the story because, well that is what propagandist do. This is all well established.
We saw the same dishonest propaganda in the run up to the Iraq war with Colin Powell going to the UN and presenting fabricated evidence.
No doubt we will see it repeated many times in the future. After all we are the "exceptional nation"
