if there's 2min left, being up 12 instead of 13 isn't a huge deal if you miss going for 2 (in attempt to go up 14). they don't have enough time to score a TD, then kick 2 FGs to beat you. whereas, if you try that move in the 3rd quarter, there's plenty of time for it to come back and bite you.
