I can't remember the name of the book, but I do remember this. Rupp gave the credit where it was due. He structured his practices almost military style the same way.
People calling Rupp racist is wrong too. He coached many blacks in Illinois as he progressed through the ranks.
In the SEC, it was impossible. He was in meetings, trying to integrate but was told teams all over the south would refuse to play. He worried about that and the safety of any young black player going in the road to a Mississippi. He said winning a basketball game meant nothing if he had to tell a poor mother and father something happened to their son. It was just different times. Like today though, we have race problems in every state really.
