Obama is a good speaker, but lets face it, the competition just isn't that stiff these days.
JFK's speeches showed a great command of the English language. FDR has a reputation for being a very good speaker but he died before I was born.
And of course, MLK was a great great speaker, one of the best in my lifetime. It really helps when you have something to say.
In general, the ability to use language is in decline as people no longer write letters and fewer read books.
When reading quotes from the 1800s to 1920s I am always struck by the eloquence of the language.
Of course that may be survival bias, as the best examples of writing from earlier times are preserved while the inarticulate drivel is discarded.
