should have any direct effect on anyone outside of the parties to the lawsuit which is appealed to SC'

I disagree with that.

I think some cases could and should be very important ones. The Supreme Court should be a bulwark against unconstitutional overstepping of boundaries by the president &/or congress, for instance.
