“I was shy and the social pressures of high school wouldn't have made it a good fit for me,” says Bates, now 60. “But at college, with the other science and math nerds, I fit right in, even though I was much younger. I could grow up on the social side at my own rate and also on the intellectual side, because the faster pace kept me interested in the content.”
Basically he was able to people that shared his interests and socialize with them.
Had he skipped to 12th grade as a 13 year old and been forced to be the young kid that didn't share anything in common with regular HS kids in gen ed classes I am sure it could have been dramatic.
Basically he was able to skip up to his intellectual maturity level that happened to coincide with people that were more mature and open minded about him.
It probably should only be allowed for the really gifted like Cosmo and the skip should put them either in college or a high school that only enrolls bright and dedicated students.
