A racist is one who believes their race is superior to another based on intelligence, physical ability, or culture. While it's natural to observe and act on differences among racial groups, a racist is one who is overly reliant on negative stereotypes in describing racial groups.

When we saw that Trump declare Curiel, a Mexican judge, wouldn't be able to rule fairly because he's a Mexican, I agree that's technically not a racist statement because Hispanic is a an ethnic designation, rather than racial. So in that case, Trump's statement would be an example of bigotry, rather than racist.

Do you see a difference between being referred to as a racist or a bigot?
