Bradley got an early start on its 2017 recruiting class Tuesday with the verbal commitment of 6-foot-7 shooting guard Ryan Stipanovich of DeSmet Jesuit High School in St. Louis.
Stipanovich, the nephew of former Missouri and NBA standout Steve Stipanovich, chose BU over scholarship offers from Evansville, North Dakota, Oral Roberts, Eastern Illinois, Wyoming, SIU-Edwardsville, IUPUI and Vermont as well as strong interest from other Missouri Valley Conference schools such as Indiana State, Missouri State and Southern Illinois.
“Ryan is a great kid, a great person,” said DeSmet coach Blake Ahearn. “He’s a 6-7 guard who has all the tools. He can pass, shoot, dribble. Anytime you have that type of size with that skill set, you don’t find that every day.”
“Ryan has the upside to be a high-major player,” said Gateway coach Scott Schroepfer. “It’s a real steal for Bradley. He’s a good fit for Coach (Brian) Wardle’s style. Ryan will flourish in their system because he’s hard-nosed and will work hard.”
Schroepfer compared Stipanovich to former Purdue star Robbie Hummel.
“Ryan does a great job of scoring at all three levels – 3-point range, mid-range and posting up,” Schroepfer said. “He does not turn the ball over. On defense, he can guard three positions. He’s just starting to get bouncy and athletic as his body matures. And I think he might grow another inch or two. His dad, Mike, is 6-9.”
