We were on probation and the program had been cratered nearly to Kim Anderson levels with fan apathy reaching a level previously unthinkable until Kim came around a decade later.
He was a proven program rebuilder, and did it at MU. Graduated players, got us off probation, won championships and had tourney success, established a clear identity for the program, and cleaned up our image.
Even Haith did considerably better than could have been initially reasonably expected. Alden's problem was not firing people quick enough, not who he hired. Other than the Kim hire which is both indefensible and inexplainable, but like you said probably forced upon him by imbeciles who didn't know better.
