Free admission with a student ID eliminates not only the need to spend money but also the need to wait in line to pick up tickets. Students are even less likely to go out of their way for basketball if they have to make a trip to the arena to pick up tickets a few times every winter.

It won't result in a packed student section by any means, but I do think it would improve attendance a little by getting more of the students on the fence.
