Van Leer owns a good shooting stroke fundamentally but lacks the quickness or athleticism to create his own shot, He has struggled against stronger and more athletic guards, often hurrying his release. He has been unable, so far in his college career, to create separation from defenders, generally resulting in hurried and off balance shot attempts. Seems to lose confidence in his stroke as a result, leading to missed opportunities he would normally be expected to finish. Would be better utilized coming off picks or receiving passes from interior players which has not been a hallmark of Missouri's offensive sets so far. Lacks horizontal or vertical mobility as a result of average foot speed and has so far been a defensive liability despite decent instincts. Has average court awareness with regard to ball movement, but is minimized by the speed and athleticism of the game in the SEC conference. Generally makes quick, crisp passes around the perimeter which rarely lead to offensive production, and are minimized by inability to penetrate inside. Works hard blocking out and attempting to gain position but is currently not athletic enough contribute to rebounding, neither offensively nor defensively. A heady player who sometimes disappears for long stretches but is capable of being productive if used properly given his limited athleticism.
