Right now, it's obvious to everyone that this is a make-or-break year for KA. Giving him a new contract wouldn't change that, and any halfway competent opposing recruiter would have no trouble making that point to a recruit.
Next year, though, if he wins enough to save his job, it's time to give him an extension to make the commitment seem sincere and not just punting the decision a year down the road.
