if you want to sell recruits on "family" and the idea that they'll be taken care of in the future, then you give him a one-year shot and if it works out, great. If it doesn't, you bought him a year to get relocated to MO and reconnect. He's been assisted beyond his playing days, which is a reason to go to any school. Look at how well the major programs help their grads, recent and way in the past. If he can't coach, then he stands out there and plays pocket-pool for a year drawing a check. You put out a press release that everyone knew it was a one-year gig going into it and that's that. If he's a distraction mid-year, he leaves to pursue other opportunities and his heart isn't into coaching....
