This a free country, and it would be difficult to imagine any coach passing up the opportunity to coach what at that time was the premier NFL team, especially when Wisconsin is Devine's home state.
But, the timing was suspect. Devine was a smart appraiser of talent and he saw that he would have an awful team at Mizzou in 1971. He left his loyal pal, Al Onofrio holding the bag.
