About 1970, resources assumed a new importance. Prior to roughly that time there were no weight rooms, player dorms, player lounges, plush football offices, specialized meeting rooms, expanded staffs, myriad analysts, etc. All of those came later. Prior to about 1970 there were really no facilities wars.
Prior to that time, coaching was much more pure in the sense that it was teaching, motivation, x's & o's, game strategy. And it played a bigger role in whether or not a program was successful.
In recruiting, the importance of resources for Devine was whether he would have the resources to go visit recruits.
Under Devine, all of the AD offices (all sports), plus dressing rooms were in the basement of Rothwell Gym. The first dressing rooms west of Providence were built in the mid 1960's. Football meetings were held on Sunday night in the Memorial Union.
It was a different world.
