Like how college basketball teams have lists of goals. Many list things like "be over .500", "win 20+ games", "go the the NCAA tournament", "win the conference", "win the national championship". It's like a ladder. A scale like from A to F.

Accomplish many of those goals and most everyone will consider the season a success even if they didn't accomplish all the goals. On the other end, not meeting many goals at all will get the season labeled a failure.

Often a team is right in the middle of a gray area. Not a failure, but not really a success either. Just kind of ok.
