even if someone hacked it there are no big smoking guns that weren't already known to the FBI, I would agree that many of those types of emails would likely have been discovered by the FBI, but don't think that necessarily would be the case.
Recipients within the government might have deleted the same emails. Others might not have been suspected as being recipients. Other recipients likely weren't in government, or at least not in ours, and even if they were, perhaps they too had private servers, especially if what they were doing was illegal, immoral or otherwise embarrassing.
There could be big donors out there, or people engaged in shady activity that Mrs. Clinton was dealing with and once her server was wiped, the FBI had no idea how many emails there were, much less what was in them or who they were sent to.
