In a socialist society everyone has essentially the same standard of living, no?

If so, what happens if someone like your friend, Fred Gumaer, did a great job and makes a lot of money, while someone else is running a similar station, but does a poor job of doing so? Does the socialist community take some from Fred and give it to Sluggo so one of them doesn't live in luxury while the other wallows in poverty?
