SWC pay to play (Pony Express aftermath) scandal took about every program down.
TCU's NCAA sanctions from that debacle had an impact until the Franchione era with the '98 season &, in particular, the '98 Sun Bowl & LaDanian Tomlinson's coming out party (beat USC) being the turning point. Ever since TCU has continued to evolve into a National power/contender.
Prior to the '80s, TCU's long term success was tied to legends like Slinging Sammy Baugh & Davey O'brien in the '30s, though they had success, as you noted, in the 50s (also the 60's, as well - Bob Lilly, et al.), which brought 2 National Championships ('35 & '38)
Long history & now, again, sustained success.
