8 team conferences are the best for everything except

making tons of money. And I've been predicting it for about 15 years that conferences would eventually shrink back in size. Not soon, but maybe another 15 years. But, one concept that is out there is the 16-team leagues with 8-team divisions. And as these divisions are based on geography, the divisions could start to act like mini-conferences. You might have a division VP (so to speak) who acts under the commissioner. Your football scheduling would be largely based upon your division, with a loose tie to the other division and a CCG.
