If not for a miracle buzzer-beater, Evansville would have been in the NCAA Tournament last year. Granted, it graduated its two star players, but still a formidable opponent. You may recall we last played Evansville 10 years ago, in 2006-07, in the midst of a 9-0 start during non-conference play. We had crushed Arkansas and then hosted Evansville at home.
To your point, though, I would actually still say this is one of the better teams we've played in recent memory in an opening game. Wofford was a good program last year but didn't end up having too great of a year.
In the past decade, this is really the only time we've scheduled a team from a league as solid as the Missouri Valley to open the season. In 2007-08, in the CBE opening games, we opened with Central Michigan, but I don't even think the MAC is comparable to the Valley.
