Everybody does things to improve their lives or get rid of a bad habit. It doesn't make it brainwashing. Just because some people have tried to use the word that (wrong) way doesn't make it right. By that definition every single person on the planet is brainwashed, it doesn't make sense. You people need to stop trying to change the definition of long-established words and you might get some credibility back in lieu of sounding like an overeducated idiot.
"Brainwashing is the systematic effort to get someone to adopt a particular (sometimes deceptive) loyalty, instruction, or doctrine. It is a colloquial term that refers in general to psychological techniques that manipulate action or thought against a person's will, desire or knowledge."
The basic tenet of brainwashing is it has to be done against a person's will, desire, or knowledge which precludes it from being used the way you would like to use it. Adding "self" on front of it doesn't change the definition.
