I don't the the government should have any interest in any private company. I do however believe that if taxes paid for research and that research leads to a patent, the tax payers should get a royalty paid back to the treasury of some significant amount (25% comes to mind as a reasonable percentage). The royalty money should then be part of the general revenue that funds the next round of grants for future research. This would free tax money to do other things like pay down the debt.
