yes and for centuries the Jews were safer in the Middle East than anywhere. The most dangerous place for them was in Catholic countries. They were not allowed to own land and so forth. Protestantism ( with a wider spread and better understanding of the Bible things changed and allowed a little more freedom of worship). In the Ottoman Empire even though they were second class citizens and had to pay some type of tax they were also allowed freedom of worship. The question of Israel and Zionism requires you to do a deeper study to fully understand the Muslim complaint and even some Jewish rejection. I am not going to go into detail.
