A study published in The Lancet estimated 64,260 deaths from traumatic injuries by June 2024, with projections reaching up to 93,000 by May 2025 when indirect deaths are included.
Over 100,000 people have been injured, and Gaza has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world.
The Israeli blockade has led to widespread starvation and famine, with 100% of the population experiencing acute food insecurity and half a million facing catastrophic levels as of July 2025.
Israel cut off water and electricity early in the conflict, and by May 2024, 84% of health centers had been destroyed or damaged.
The blockade and military actions have been described as using starvation as a weapon of war, a recognized genocidal act.
Cultural and societal infrastructure has also been systematically destroyed. All 12 universities and 80% of schools in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged, along with numerous religious and cultural sites.
Over 1.9 million Palestinians—85% of Gaza’s population—have been forcibly displaced, constituting mass forced displacement, another act cited as genocidal.
In July 2025, leading Israeli human rights organizations B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights–Israel concluded that Israel is committing genocide, marking a significant development as these are the first Israeli organizations to make such a determination based on meticulous research.
They cited repeated statements by Israeli officials endorsing the total destruction, starvation, and permanent displacement of Palestinians, which they argue demonstrate genocidal intent.
The United Nations Special Committee, Médecins Sans Frontières, the International Federation for Human Rights, and numerous genocide scholars have also concluded that Israel’s actions meet the criteria for genocide.
South Africa has brought a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging violations of the Genocide Convention. In January 2024, the ICJ ruled that Palestinians in Gaza have a “plausible” right to protection from genocide and ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent genocidal acts, allow humanitarian aid, and prevent incitement to genocide.
Despite Israel’s claims that its actions are lawful military operations against Hamas, Amnesty International and other experts argue that genocidal intent can coexist with military objectives.
The cumulative impact of mass killings, destruction of essential infrastructure, forced displacement, and dehumanizing rhetoric by senior Israeli officials supports the conclusion that the intent to destroy the Palestinian population in Gaza, in whole or in part, is evident.
