is that there are thousands of tariff codes. And within that there are products that are truly needed.

I work in agriculture, and there are a bunch of products from China that are exempt from even the high tariffs. It is complicated as hell when you get into the details.

Trump policies have further complicated things as well, because he attaches other things to his tariff policies (like his drug stuff, or trying to fix an overall trade deficit).

I would generally agree with your principal, but, typical government, they have carved so many exceptions, just like our tax code.
