Friend has Mediacom issue, what are their easement rights?

Mediacom came in and didn't end up burying a cable, they excavated in her yard. After they reset the dirt, there was a 500 square-foot of new dirt that had to be reseeded. Does anyone know what the easement rights for a cable company is. Their boxes are typically more than 20 feet from the road. Do they have the right to excavate something that's hat's 500 ft.²?
