Those who are interested in expanding their thinking on the Border War rivalry should consider attending a presentation the day before the rivalry game. See the link below for a presentation by the University of Missouri’s Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy. This presentation will go well beyond the history-based “jayhawker = noble abolitionist vs jayhawker = lawless marauder” trash talking between the fan bases (too often encompassing the kU Athletic Department). I understand the presentation will describe how the border warfare episode in regional history is predominantly remembered through the lens of a sports rivalry, how that obscures and distorts important socio-political aspects of the border warfare, and, as a result, how we have failed to learn from the border warfare episode important lessons pertinent to the survival and success of our constitutional democracy.
