do is rationalize as you do that somehow the US and NATO's activities were "poking and prodding". If Russia or China had done in Mexico or Canada what the US did in Ukraine in 2014 and with NATO over the past decade, we would 100% justify invasion, attack.

I don't think Putin had much choice. You can't negotiate with the US or NATO, both have proven completely untrustworthy and have proven that only force is compelling.
