"Knowing Jeffrey Epstein, dining with Jeffrey Epstein, doing business with Jeffrey Epstein, traveling with Jeffrey Epstein, or otherwise socializing with Jeffrey Epstein — short of being involved in his sexual crimes — isn’t a justification for shining the light of public scrutiny on anyone.
Saying that those individuals can clear their own names is easy when it is not your name being held up to ridicule and opprobrium when — in fact — you’ve done nothing wrong.
As President Trump knows all too well from his 40+ years in the public spotlight, some baseless allegations can never be made to go away no matter how corrupt or malicious the person making the charge turns out to be. Some segment of the public will always assume the public charge was accurate.
It has long been DOJ policy to not identify persons who come under investigation but are not charged. The mere existence of an investigation will lead some to believe “Well, if there is smoke there must be fire” no matter how baseless the allegation that led to the investigation in the first instance."
