Historically, the area known as the Gaza Strip has been under various forms of control, not directly "given" to Palestinians in the sense of a complete handover of sovereign statehood.
Key periods in the control of Gaza include:
Before 1948: Part of the League of Nations mandate of Palestine under British rule.
1948-1967: Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Egypt took control of the Gaza Strip, according to Wikipedia.
1967-1994: Israel captured Gaza in the 1967 Six-Day War and occupied it for decades.
1994: Israel began a phased transfer of governmental authority to the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the Gaza Strip (and Jericho in the West Bank) under the Oslo Accords.
2005: Israel withdrew its military forces and settlements from the Gaza Strip.
2007-Present: Hamas, a militant group, took control of the Gaza Strip, following a conflict with the PA. The PA, however, continues to claim de jure control over the territory.
The term "given to the Palestinians" is not entirely accurate in this context. While the Oslo Accords established a limited degree of self-governance for Palestinians in Gaza, the area has remained under contested control, with ongoing periods of conflict and occupation.
