Happy Independence Day

The purpose of Independence Day is to remember how the Americans sought and obtained independence from Britain. They secured what they perceived to be their rights as inheritors of British legal and cultural tradition. Independence Day is an expression of our own particular People, in remembrance of a specific event that was experienced by our ancestors, our forefathers.

It is not the purpose of Independence Day to celebrate an abstract independence of an individual to live his life as he sees fit. Independence Day is not about a conceptual freedom, applicable to any or all humans. It’s not a day for foreigners to celebrate “natural rights.” It’s about the American experience of separating as a people from their mother country. It’s a celebration of a real historical event.

It’s a celebration for Heritage Americans, who see themselves as inheritors of this shared cultural memory — theoretical liberty based on universal individual rights that apply to everybody on American soil is NOT what this holiday is about. It’s not about freedom of conscience, or freedom of religion, or freedom of individual self expression, or a free market, or diversity; but you will see postwar Paper Americans pushing these conceptions of Independence Day. Reject it at every turn.
